Media Companies
The Moldovan media landscape is characterised by a complex mixture of public institutions, private ownership, and foreign investments. While the market lacks the presence of large media conglomerates typical for other European countries, it features several business groups with significant influence. The public sector is represented by Teleradio-Moldova (TRM), which operates national television and radio channels, and the regional public broadcaster Gagauziya Radio Televizionu (GRT). Private ownership is diverse but concentrated amongst a relatively small group of business figures and families who often maintain interests across different sectors of the economy. Foreign ownership is limited but notable, with Romanian public media maintaining a presence through TVR Moldova and Radio Chișinău, and some Russian media groups operating in the market. The online media sector has emerged as particularly dynamic, with technology companies and digital-first businesses playing an increasingly important role. Recent years have seen significant changes in ownership patterns, particularly following regulatory actions against media outlets affiliated with politically exposed persons and internationally sanctioned individuals, leading to a redistribution of market share and the emergence of new players.
