The Romanian Television is the first television in Romania. The first broadcast was on December 31, 1956, being transmitted in black and white format. The station operated within the Romanian Radio and Television, led by a committee appointed by the Council of Ministers. For several years, the shows were only live. The station operated on a subscription basis, which was paid for with the purchase of TV sets. The first color broadcast took place in 1983. In December 1989, television was broadcasting live the fall of the communist regime, after having functioned as its propaganda tool. The Romanian Television was the only television in the world that broadcasts live a change of political regime.
From 1990, "Free Romanian Television" - as it called itself in the midst of the events of December - enters another era. In 1993 the Romanian Television becomes a member of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).
In 1994, the Law establishing the Romanian Television Company was adopted.
On December 1, 2013, following the conclusion of the amicable settlement agreement of the application submitted to the ECHR by the Romanian Television Company, TVR Moldova was launched in the Republic of Moldova. In 2019, TVR Moldova was included in the "must carry" list, cable distributors in Moldova being obliged to retransmit it in their packages.
