Protv.md was launched in 2007 by Pro Digital SRL, founded by Central European Media Enterprises BV. Initially, only the programs and news from Pro TV, one of the first private TV channels in the Republic of Moldova, were posted on the protv.md website, and later the portal began to publish its own journalistic content. PROTV Chisinau was the only TV station to broadcast live coverage of the April 2009 protests in Chisinau, including the foreign TV channels. The schedule of Pro TV includes three news bulletins, a political talk show ("In profunzime"), entertainment programs ("iSănătate", "O seară perfectă” (A Perfect Evening) and „Gusturile se discută”" (Tastes are Discussed"), as well as movies and TV series. Since its establishment, the media company managing the TV station is headed by Cătălin Giosan.

Facts

Founding Year2007
FounderCME Media Enterprises BV

Protv.md was launched under the umbrella of CME Media Enterprises BV, founded by Ronald Lauder and Mark Palmer. Central European Media Enterprises BV (CME) is a media company operating a total of 46 television channels across seven countries: Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Romania, Moldova, Slovakia, and Slovenia. Founded in 1991 by Ronald Lauder and Mark Palmer, CME was established to provide independent television alternatives in Eastern European countries seeking alternatives to state media.

Ronald Lauder, the company's co-founder, is the heir to the Estée Lauder cosmetics fortune, having retired from the company in 1983. Between 1986 and 1987, he served as U.S. Ambassador to Austria, which allowed him to build valuable personal contacts and gain practical experience in Europe. Following the fall of the Iron Curtain in the early 1990s, Lauder sought business opportunities in the newly liberated countries of Eastern Europe. He partnered with Mark Palmer, a former U.S. Ambassador to Hungary, and together they founded CME, focusing on television as a sector with significant growth potential.

In addition to founding CME, Ronald Lauder also established Israeli TV and, in 2010, founded RWL Water, LLC. He is actively involved in philanthropy and civic activism, advocating for Jewish causes, and has served as president of the World Jewish Congress since 2007.

Mark Palmer is a former Fellow of the American Academy of Diplomacy, Vice President of Freedom House and of the Council for a Community of Democracies. He also co-founded the National Endowment for Democracy. He retired from public service after co-founding the business with Ronald Lauder, the move being interpreted as a conflict of interest. He later headed the Central European Development Corp. He also owned real estate businesses.
